The Dream

"The Dream" by Henri Rousseau is one of my favorite paintings. I remember seeing it in person for  the first time at MOMA in NYC and being stunned. I would visit it every time I went back to the MOMA when I lived in New York. I love the jungle theme that permeates much of Rousseau's work and the way he brings the presence of the animals to an equal level of their human counterparts.

Apparently Rousseau thought viewers of this painting would not understand it, so he wrote an accompanying poem to this painting (translated into English):

Yadwigha in a beautiful dream
Having fallen gently to sleep
Heard the sounds of a reed instrument
Played by a well-intentioned snake charmer.
As the moon reflected
On the flowers, the verdant trees,
The wild snakes lend an ear
To the joyous tunes of the instrument.

Valentine's Day gift guide

V-day is right around the corner and if you're celebrating with your honey, your gals or treating yourself everyone deserves to feel the love! Here are some of my valentine favorites this year.

This cookbook Six Seasons looks as beautiful as the recipes sound. It's definitely on my gift list!

Instead of a bouquet this year, how about tree in a great basket that you can enjoy year round?

A statement necklace is a nice change from the dainty jewelry that is all the rage. This one has a waxed cotton cord that only gets softer with wear. Toss it over a t-shirt, sweater or tunic, no effort required.

White pillar candles - I love scented candles but sometimes I just like the ambience without the smell. Plus you don't have to feel bad about using these up quickly. These were found at Crate & Barrel, but you can get them pretty much anywhere!

Under Aurora is one of my favorite natural skincare brands these days. I love the nourishing facial oil the best! The Facial Care Trial Set is such a lovely gift at a great price.

When I was in Taiwan this past October I discovered my love for nama chocolate. It's basically a super-rich, buttery chocolate fudge. It's a bit pricy to get shipped but so worth it! Or better yet, find a local store if you're able. Royce seems to be the most famous brand.

Love the dreamy style of Clare Elsaesser 's work. A nice framed print is such an ideal gift.

Drink your wine in style with this gorgeous decanter set by Corbe.

Spring Favorites

Spring is my favorite time of year - a time of hope and renewal and fresh air and green-ness. See my favorite spring picks below!

1. Belle Isle in Detroit - such a good spot to catch a little nature. Check out a great photo essay with photos by Ali Lapetina & Alex Hoxie over at Grand Circus Magazine

2. I love the spring/summer collection by Worthwhile Paper - like a breath of fresh air!

3. Currently listening to Rachel Sweet's album "Fool Around". It was released in 1978 when she was just 16. It reminds me of Kate Bush with a retro country vibe and a touch of Miley Cyrus. It's super fun! Listen on Spotify here.

4. Wall hangings by West Perro - I imagine these hanging among some plants soaking up those springtime rays. 

5. For those rainy spring nights when we're cozied up on the couch - thoroughly enjoying the show Crashing on HBO.

6. I'm obsessed with this denim jacket from Sandro Paris. It actually belongs to my husband but I keep stealing it! I love the longer cut of it - it looks good on everyone. I'm currently on the hunt for a vintage (& more affordable) version for myself.

Inspiration - JB Blunk

I became acquainted with the work of JB Blunk recently while reading an issue of Apartamento magazine. His body of work and way of life really resonated with me - I've thought about him almost every day since reading the article and learning about him has really made me and my husband think about how we want to live our lives.

JB blurred the lines between art and craft, creating furniture and sculpture by way of wood, clay, and stone. He even dabbled in jewelry and weavings. He gained inspiration from time spent in Japan working with a couple of famed ceramicists, gaining their friendship by simply being a gentle and humble guy.

After Japan he got an plot of land in the mountains of Inverness, CA and built a home and studio in this idyllic setting revolving around the simple lifestyle he wanted to live - still very much inspired by Japan. It really seems like his home and work reflected who he truly was as a person.

To me, JB Blunk's life sounds like dream. He lived a life of freedom and artistic expression without being forced into any sort of box. He created his ideal home in his ideal setting and lived simply. He was humble, kind and hardworking. I definitely do not claim to be an expert on him but I am a huge admirer. Stack 'Em High

Want to trick out your hands but not sure how? Stacking rings are a great way to start — you can mix and match them so many ways. By day, go for a minimal look with just a ring or two; by night, stack 'em high for a stronger statement. They are so lightweight and easy to wear that you'll barely feel them.

The key to mixing stacking rings is creating a balanced look. Stick to rings that are all on a similar scale to make a unified look. If you want to stack a ton of rings on one finger, think about keeping the rest of your hand more minimal to balance it out. If you want to wear a midi ring above the knuckle, stay more understated on that finger below and balance it out with a bigger stack on an opposite finger.
